Mother of Philando Castile reaches $3M settlement

Just days after acquitting the Minnesota officer, Jeronimo Yanez, of shooting Philando Castile, a Black motorist that was pulled over in June 2016 for a minor traffic infraction that turned deadly.

Immediately after the shooting Castile’s girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, begun streaming Facebook Live as a desperate means for help to ensure the safety of herself and her four-year-old child that was also in the vehicle.  That very same video would later garner national attention that upset millions from around the world.

Castile’s mother, Valerie Castile, will be collecting the amount of $2,995,000 from the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust that insures city of St. Anthony.  St. Anthony’s Police Department is insured with $3,000,000 per occurrence,  Castile’s girlfriend has the option to file for the remaining $5,000.

Yanez’s acquittal prompted days of protest that caused 18 people to be arrested.  The city of St. Anthony has offered Yanez offered a voluntary separation agreement that.
